ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan Steps Aside Amid Sexual Misconduct Investigation
Khan Takes Leave as ICC Investigates Allegations, Deputy Prosecutors to Assume Duties
Karim Khan, the International Criminal Court’s chief prosecutor since 2021, has taken a leave of absence amid an investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct. Khan announced his decision Friday, citing “escalating media reports,” according to ICC spokesperson Fadi El Abdallah.
In an email to staff, Khan stated, “My decision is driven by deep and unwavering commitment to the credibility of our Office and the Court, and to safeguard the integrity of the process and fairness to all involved.” Efforts to reach Khan for comment were unsuccessful.
The allegations involve unwanted sexual contact with a female colleague over approximately a year, occurring at the ICC office, Khan’s home, and during work trips. Khan denies the claims and is also accused of pressuring the complainant not to pursue the matter and retaliating against supporting staff.
Khan’s absence, even if temporary, impacts the ICC, where he has led high-profile cases, including arrest warrants for Russian and Israeli leaders. Deputy prosecutors will handle his duties during the investigation, El Abdallah confirmed.
