FTC Investigating Media Matters Over Alleged Collusion With Advertisers
Probe Follows Elon Musk Lawsuit Accusing Group of Undermining X’s Ad Partnerships
The Federal Trade Commission has launched an investigation into Media Matters, a Democrat-aligned advocacy group known for publishing reports on antisemitic and hateful content on X, according to two individuals familiar with the probe. In a letter to the organization, the FTC indicated it is examining whether Media Matters illegally coordinated with advertisers.
The investigation follows a 2023 lawsuit filed by Elon Musk, owner of X and close adviser to President Trump, accusing the group of intentionally harming the platform’s advertising relationships. That legal case remains ongoing.
Media Matters has not responded to requests for comment. The FTC declined to provide a statement.
