FBI Releases Over 100 Pages of Writings from Covenant School Shooter Audrey Hale
Documents Include Maps, Violent Rants, and Preparations for Attack
The Federal Bureau of Investigation on Thursday released 112 pages of writings recovered from the vehicle of Audrey Hale, the individual responsible for the deadly 2023 shooting at Nashville’s Covenant School that left three children and three staff members dead.
The release follows a prolonged legal battle led by The Tennessee Star and the Tennessee Firearms Association, both of which sought public access to the materials. Among the documents were redacted pages containing maps of the school’s first and second floors, lists of faculty members, and calendar notes indicating when the school was on break during the 2022–2023 academic year.
Hale, who once wrote that they felt “born wrong,” filled the pages with disturbing reflections and logistical planning. “Why does my brain not work right? Cause I was born wrong. Nothing on earth can save me. Never-ending pain. Religion won’t save,” one passage reads.
The documents also contain detailed notes on firearms and shooting drills. One section titled “beggining [sic] shooters” includes entries labeled “Defensive Pistol I, II, and III,” focusing on safety rules, situational awareness, and gun handling. Other entries reference upcoming gun shows and legislation, including a profanity-laced rant about Biden’s plans to ban assault weapons.
Drawings and labeled sketches of a body appeared across several pages, captioned with terms like “Front side,” “Inside vest,” and “Vest back,” beneath the phrase “on death day.” Many of these diagrams were heavily redacted.
One page shows Hale considering delaying the attack to April, writing that “April reminds me of Columbine. It be nice to set in history of a date 3 days before” the anniversary of the 1999 Columbine High School massacre.
Other writings include multiple task lists leading up to the planned “death day,” including books to read, movies to watch, and step-by-step instructions on weapons preparation and attack logistics.
Among the previously reported documents also included in the release were a page titled “my imaginary penis,” a racist rant calling to “kill those kids, those crackers,” and passages focused on “brown love.”
