DOJ Worked With Hunter Biden’s Legal Team on Press Strategy, Docs Show
Newly obtained emails show DOJ prosecutors and Hunter Biden’s legal team collaborated on media responses during the federal investigation, raising concerns about bias and coordination.
Internal communications obtained by the Oversight Project reveal Justice Department prosecutors coordinated with Hunter Biden’s legal team on press responses during the federal investigation into his finances—supporting whistleblower claims the probe was compromised.
The documents, tied to Special Counsel David Weiss’s office, show Assistant U.S. Attorney Leslie Wolf and DOJ Tax Prosecutor Mark Daly joined a coordination call with Hunter’s attorneys to craft a media response. A DOJ summary of the call includes a “Proposed Statement” drafted by Hunter’s counsel, who requested the document receive “FOIA confidential treatment” to keep it hidden from public records requests.
According to whistleblower Gary Shapley, Daly played a key role in delaying the case and helped launch a “fishing expedition” targeting agents critical of DOJ conduct. Shapley also testified that Wolf tipped off Hunter’s team about an upcoming search and blocked questions about Joe Biden.
Notably, Daly’s notes show Hunter’s lawyers submitted memos “right after calls with [the] reporter,” though part of the entry remains redacted. Oversight attorneys say the timing raises concerns that Hunter’s team may have prompted the effort to investigate whistleblowers.
The records paint a picture of a cooperative—not adversarial—relationship between Hunter’s defense and the prosecution, with both sides working to shape public messaging and explore off-ramps from prosecution.
